Skin Tightening with Thermage

Skin Tightening with Thermage™ can improve the skin’s appearance with non-invasive radiofrequency technology. The Thermage procedure tightens skin and renews facial contours by reshaping the skin’s innermost structures. The ThermaCool TC used for Thermage is a radio-frequency device that allows for tightening of skin without injury to the skin’s top layer (epidermis). It works by generating deep, intense, uniform, sustained heat in the tissue underneath the surface of the skin. This causes contractions and results in the tightening of excessively loose or lax skin.

The procedure itself may take anywhere from 45 to 120 minutes depending upon the size of the area treated. Each time the machine is fired, there is a sensation of heat in the area. Fortunately, this heat sensation lasts only fractions of a second and is followed by a cooling sensation.

Down time is minimal and unique to each patient. Some patients will have redness, but this generally disappears within an hour. Swelling and mild tenderness is common after the procedure, and can be alleviated with an over-the-counter pain medication. Although results can be seen immediately in some patients, most will see improvement gradually over 4 to 6 months. Since the effects are so gradual, the patient may not be aware of the extent of the changes, but pre- and post-operative pictures will usually demonstrate the improvement.
